He joined the EPO as an examiner in 1998, working mainly in the areas of pattern recognition and video games, and was appointed a member of the Boards of Appeal in 2010. His scientific interests included logic, computational linguistics, cognitive science and compiler technology. Martin studied computer science at the University of Karlsruhe (now KIT) and received a respective PhD from the University of Saarland. He is a regular speaker and author on patent law issues.
